Metro and buses

Major cities usually support wallet transport codes, ticket machines, and service counters. Activate the city code before reaching the gate.

  • Use Alipay or Weixin Pay transport code when available.
  • Keep the app open for both entry and exit gates.
  • Buy a single-ride ticket if a QR code fails.

High-speed rail

12306 is the official rail platform. English-friendly travel platforms can also help, but your ticket is still tied to real-name passport details.

  • Enter passport number and name carefully.
  • Carry the same passport to the station.
  • Arrive early if identity verification is incomplete.

DiDi ride-hailing

DiDi supports English and can also be used inside Alipay or WeChat. Add payment first, then save your pickup and destination in Chinese.

  • Use in-app translation for driver messages.
  • Match license plate and car model before entering.
  • Enable auto-pay to avoid cash negotiation at the end.

Street taxis

Licensed taxis often accept cash and local QR payments. If you are unsure, confirm payment before starting the ride.

  • Carry small RMB notes.
  • Show the Chinese destination address.
  • Ask for a receipt if there is a dispute or lost item.
