How to set up Alipay for foreigners

  1. 1. Download the official app

Install it before departure while app-store access and SMS are still reliable. Use the official store links.

  2. 3. Identity Verification (Can do later)
    • Go to Me > Settings > Account & Security > Identity Verification > Upload passport & Verify face.
    • Upload a photo of your passport and fill in personal details. This step is mandatory for higher transaction limits.
  3. 4. Bank Card Binding
    • Go to the "Me" tab, and choose "Bank Cards".
    • Then click on "Add Card".
    • Use a supported card and keep your cardholder name consistent with your passport or account details.
    • If your bank flags the first attempt, approve the verification request and try again with a smaller test payment.

Alipay quick FAQ

Can I use Alipay without a Chinese phone number?

Usually yes for basic visitor setup, as long as your overseas number can receive SMS. Some local services may still prefer a mainland number.

Can I use Alipay without a Chinese bank account?

Yes for many merchant payments if your international card is supported, but peer transfers and some local categories may not work.

Should I add funds to a balance?

Most visitors should start with linked-card payments. Only use optional balance or pass-style features if the app clearly offers them for your region and fee level.

Is Alipay enough by itself?

No. Set up Weixin Pay too, bring a second card, and carry small RMB notes for outages, unsupported merchants, or bank checks.

Weixin Pay setup guide

Weixin Pay lives inside WeChat and is valuable because many restaurants, shops, and services use WeChat mini programs.

  • Install WeChat, register or sign in, then open the wallet/payment area.
  • Add an international card and make sure the account name and card identity details are consistent.
  • Keep WeChat ready for scan-to-order restaurant menus and service mini programs.
  • Do not rely on foreign-card wallets for peer transfers, red packets, or every local merchant category.
  • If one QR route fails, try Alipay, a second card, or small RMB backup instead of holding the line.

Backup plan

Do not travel with only one payment route. Apps, card issuers, data connection, identity checks, and merchant categories can all fail at the wrong moment.

  • Carry small RMB notes for taxis, markets, deposits, and temporary app issues.
  • Bring a second card and enable overseas use before departure.
  • Keep your hotel address in Chinese so you can recover from payment or ride issues calmly.
  • Read the final payment screen for any service fee, especially on larger foreign-card wallet payments.

Payment setup FAQ

Which app should I set up first?

Set up Alipay first if you want the easiest visitor path, then set up Weixin Pay because many restaurants and local services live inside WeChat.

Do I need a mainland China phone number?

Usually not for basic visitor setup, but you do need a phone number that can reliably receive SMS. A mainland number can make some local services smoother.

Can I use only Visa or Mastercard?

Sometimes at hotels, airports, international malls, and larger merchants. Smaller shops, restaurants, taxis, and delivery usually expect QR payment or cash.

Why did my payment fail?

Common causes include weak data, bank fraud checks, mismatched identity details, wallet limits, unsupported merchant categories, or app risk controls.

Should I carry cash?

Yes. Carry small RMB notes as a backup for taxis, small vendors, deposits, app outages, or cases where a merchant cannot process your foreign-card wallet payment.
