Clothing stores and malls
Large malls may accept international cards, while smaller stores usually prefer Alipay or Weixin Pay. Ask about return rules before payment.
- Keep the digital receipt screen until you leave.
- Ask whether returns go back to the same payment method.
- Use wallet QR for local brands and small shops.
International cards
Cards are most useful at hotels, airports, international malls, and larger merchants. They are less reliable at local restaurants and small stores.
- Tell your bank you are traveling.
- Enable overseas use and know your PIN.
- Keep a second card in a separate place.
Cash backup
Cash is still useful when an app freezes, a card is blocked, or a small merchant cannot process foreign-card wallet payments.
- Carry small RMB notes for taxis, markets, and deposits.
- Use ATMs that display your card network.
- Avoid relying only on large notes for small purchases.
When payment fails
Step aside and try a different route. Common causes include weak data, card issuer fraud checks, wallet limits, merchant category restrictions, or identity mismatch.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or back again.
- Try the other wallet or another linked card.
- Use cash if the purchase is urgent.
